This week’s newsletter captures the key insights and reflections from my conversation with Henry Mintzberg - a writer, researcher, and educator about managing organizations, developing managers, and rebalancing societies.
Today’s episode will be centered on his latest and 22nd book, Bust Those Management Myths. The book distills 50 years of his thinking on the topic. I’m super excited to have him on the podcast.
In this episode, renowned management expert Henry Mintzberg discusses his book "Bust Those Management Myths," challenging traditional corporate wisdom that relies heavily on spreadsheets, strict planning, and top-down control. Mintzberg asserts that "strategic planning" is an oxymoron because genuine strategies emerge organically from ground-level actions rather than abstract boardroom predictions.
He critiques boards and executives for disconnecting from what they manage, over-relying on metrics and shareholder value, and blaming implementers when strategies fail. Mintzberg introduces “communityship” as a necessary counterweight to individual-centric leadership, explaining how excessive measurement & hierarchical thinking can weaken organizational soul and trust.
Mintzberg advocates for a balanced approach where leadership integrates intuition and judgment alongside metrics to build sustainable, soulful businesses.

Key Insights and My Reflections
Here in Silicon Valley, we pride ourselves on building bleeding-edge technology designed to shape the future. Yet inside these very same organizations, the internal management practices look shockingly archaic, dogmatic, and ineffective. Why do high-tech companies that disrupt entire industries rely on outdated organizational dogma to manage their own people?
To unpack this question, I sat down on the podcast with legendary management thinker Henry Mintzberg. Mintzberg. He has spent over 50 years researching, teaching, and writing about organizational effectiveness. In his 22nd and latest book, Bust Those Management Myths: What We Get Wrong About Planning, Leading, Measuring, and More, Mintzberg distills five decades of research to dismantle the most persistent corporate dogmas.
